What you need to know

How to create engaging online videos using your smartphone is an online course returning for summer 2024. It is delivered through HD videos accessible by signing in to an online portal.

Each Monday morning, for four consecutive weeks, a collection of new learning materials is released.

The learning objectives of each week are:

  • Week one - How to plan & structure your ideas to produce creative videos

  • Week two - Learn the practical skills required to film high quality videos using your smartphone

  • Week three - Gain the knowledge needed to edit footage on your smartphone

  • Week four - Understand the skills you need to structure a live video to increase interaction with your audience

Week one explains how to plan & structure your ideas to produce creative engaging online videos that viewers want to watch.

Learning points covered include:

  • Exploration of how video content is consumed online

  • How to structure an idea to deliver it through video

  • How you can effectively communicate on video

  • How to produce scripts & shot lists

  • Legal considerations around filming

Activities: If you follow all the activities in week one you will have identified three video concepts you wish to produce in weeks two & three.

Learning objectives: Learn the practical skills required to film high quality videos using your smartphone

Week two teaches you the practical skills of shooting professional looking footage using your smartphone.

Learning points covered include:

  • How to prepare your smartphone for filming

  • Framing a shot, angles & building a sequence

  • Sound & lighting advice

  • How to appear more confident on-camera

  • How to use simple low budget filming equipment to give your footage the edge

Activities: If you follow all the activities in week two you will have shot your three video concepts developed in week one

Week three: What you’ll learn

Learning objectives: Gain the knowledge needed to edit footage on your smartphone

Week three teaches you the principles around editing footage. You will learn how to edit within your smartphone’s camera reel before understanding the benefits of using a free downloadable editing app.

Learning points covered include:

  • The fundamental principles of video editing

  • The layout of editing apps explained

  • How to write & add voiceover

  • The importance of music & copyright considerations

  • How your choice of titles affects viewer’s mood

  • Storage & file management

Activities: If you follow all the activities in week three you will have edited your three video concepts from week one.

Learning objectives: Understand the skills you need to structure a live video to increase interaction with your audience

Week four discusses how video ideas need to be adapted for streaming live on social media. You will master how to maximise engagement with your viewers and how to appear confident during a live stream.

Learning points covered include:

  • Identifying the editorial differences between pre-recorded and live videos

  • The benefits of live videos for your business

  • Learn to adjust & structure your content ideas to make them work for live video

  • How to keep your audience engaged & interacting with you

Activities: If you follow all the activities in week four you will be ready to stream your brand’s first live broadcast.

How I’ll support you

In addition to pre-recorded video modules released to you each Monday morning, I will support you along the way. This includes:

  • A live Q&A with me each week - I’ll be answering questions about that week’s learning topics on a live group video call each Thursday or Friday. If you can’t attend, the session will be recorded and made available for you to watch when it’s convenient.

  • Lifetime access to a private Facebook group - All students will have access to a private Facebook group allowing you to network, upload & share your work and receive feedback from your peers and I.

  • Lifetime access to the course content - After the four week course ends, your course log-in remains active and you’ll receive all updates to the course for free.
